POS Software for Retail: A 10-Point Buying Checklist
Choosing POS software for a retail store or supermarket? Use this 10-point checklist covering speed, offline mode, barcode, stock, multi-store and support.

Your point of sale is where every rupee enters the business. The wrong POS creates queues, stock errors and late nights reconciling cash. Use this checklist before you buy.
The 10-point checklist
1. Billing speed
Time a real transaction: scan five items, apply a discount, take a UPI payment and print. Anything over 20 seconds will hurt you on a busy evening.
2. Offline mode
The POS must keep billing without internet and sync later without duplicates.
3. Barcode and label printing
Look for support for standard scanners, plus the ability to print your own barcode labels for loose items.
4. Live inventory
Every sale should reduce stock instantly, with low-stock alerts and purchase suggestions.
5. Multi-counter and multi-store
Even if you have one counter today, choose a system that can grow to more counters and branches.
6. Hardware compatibility
Thermal printers, cash drawers, weighing scales and Android POS terminals should all work without fuss.
7. Roles and permissions
Staff shouldn't be able to edit bills or see profit margins unless you allow it.
8. Owner reports on mobile
You should see today's sales, cash and stock from your phone, anywhere.
9. Integrations
UPI and card payments, WhatsApp receipts, Tally and your e-commerce store.
10. Support and ownership
Check response times, who owns your data and what happens if you leave.
